A palynological and palaeoclimatological record from the southern Philippines since the Last Glacial Maximum ArchiMer
Bian, Yeping; Jian, Zhimin; Weng, Chengyu; Kuhnt, Wolfgang; Bolliet, Timothe; Holbourn, Ann.
A palynological analysis of a marine sediment core in the southern Philippines, provides a detailed regional vegetation and climate history for the West Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP) since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Chronology was determined by a detailed oxygen isotope record. A higher representation of pollen from tropical upper montane rainforest during the LGM indicate that this forest type moved down along elevation, probabaly due to the lowered temperature. During the last deglaciation and the early Holocene, mangroves were more expanded and tropical mid and upper montane rainforests were restricted, suggesting a rising sea-level and temperature increase. Herbaceous pollen and pteridophyte spore records indicate a much drier condition during the LGM...

Approche de la circulation residuelle en Baie de Seine ArchiMer
Lehir, P; Salomon, J; Leprovost, C; Chabertd'Hieres, G; Mauvais, J.
By taking into account salinity measurements and consequently mean residence time, current measurements, tidal computation with a 2-D model and wind induced currents provided by a 3-D model, a global diagram of residual flow in Seine Bay is given. Main patterns are exhibited: density currents in the eastern part of the bay, off the Seine Estuary, wind induced circulation, especially along the coast and over the Channels, and tidal residual patterns induced by topography.

Characterization of water availability in a hydrographic basin REA
Arai,Fabiane K.; Pereira,Silvio B.; Gonçalves,Geula G. G..
The quantitative knowledge of hydrological parameters (rainfall and flow) and their spatial and temporal variability on the regions or basins should be understood as essential to the efficient planning and management of water resources. Because the Ivinhema Basin, located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, represents an important inductor on the region agricultural development, characterized as a major producer of grains and meat, it was used to characterize the hydrological study. Knowing the rainfall, flow and drainage area of each of the studied affluent, it was calculated the proportion of contribution of the affluent. To that end, it was proposed the concepts of potential and real contributions, aiming to identify the proportion of...

Effect of river runoff on sea level from in-situ measurements and numerical models in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Laiz, Irene; Ferrer, Luis; Plomaritis, Theocharis A.; Charria, Guillaume.
Daily time series of in-situ tide gauge records and river runoff data were analysed to investigate the contribution of river discharge storm events to sea level in the Bay of Biscay. Three main river systems were considered for this study, representing cases of small (Nervión, 1900 km2), medium (Adour, 16880 km2) and large (Gironde, 84811 km2) watershed basins. Typical storms correspond to water discharge rates of 150, 700, and 1100 m3 s−1 from the Nervión, Adour, and Gironde rivers, respectively. The effect of these events on daily mean sea level was evaluated using two different approaches: (1) through the analysis of time series of tide gauges placed within the river mouths; and (2) through numerical simulations using the ROMS model (Regional Ocean...

Factors driving seed dispersal in a Neotropical river-floodplain system Acta Botanica
Fernández,Florencia Facelli; Schneider,Berenice; Zilli,Florencia.
ABSTRACT Dispersal is a key process affecting the diversity of natural communities. We addressed hydrochory of wetland plant seeds in the Middle Paraná River floodplain. We first studied seed dispersal by drifting macrophytes in the Paraná River main channel (MC), in a high discharge secondary channel (HD) and in two low discharge channels (LD) during an extraordinary flood. We then experimentally analyzed the effect of standing (SW) and moving water (MW) on seed buoyancy of different plant communities. We recorded seeds of 27 taxa distributed in 12 families. Taxa richness ranged from 17 in LD to 25 in MC, and included seeds of terrestrial, palustrine and aquatic plants. River discharge did not affect seed richness and density, which was probably...

Impact of a river flash flood on microbial carbon and nitrogen production in a Mediterranean Lagoon (Thau Lagoon, France) ArchiMer
Fouilland, E.; Trottet, A.; Bancon-montigny, C.; Bouvy, M.; Le Floc'H, E.; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Hatey, E.; Mas, S.; Mostajir, B.; Nouguier, J.; Pecqueur, D.; Rochelle-newall, E.; Rodier, C.; Roques, C.; Salles, C.; Tournoud, M. -g.; Vidussi, F..
Over half of the total nitrogen, phosphorus, silicate and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loading was discharged from the Wile River into the Thau Lagoon waters within the first five days of what was considered to be the autumn flash flood period. Such loads represented about 8% and 3% of the yearly averaged total nitrogen and phosphorus load in Thau Lagoon, respectively. Although this event affected >20% of the total lagoon volume, river trace metal loads contributed apparently only weakly to the increase in labile trace metal concentrations in the lagoon surface waters. Differences between theoretical dilution values and observed values were also noticed for phosphate, silicate and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. DOC losses (10-50%)...

Influence of Seawall Line Choice on Tide Lock Drainage in Tidal Flat Inning:Cangdongpian Inning Area on the west part of Tiaozini Sand as a case study. OceanDocs
Li, Jialin; Wang, Yanhong; Zhang, Renshun.
Most of the flood from the wide inner lowland plain discharges through tide locks on coast, and the influence of tidal flat inning projects on the tide lock drainage must be solved by seawall line choice. Taking the Cangdongpian inning area on the west side of Tiaozini Sand as a case study, the paper analyzed the compages and validity of ebb tide water to maintain the flood discharge creek below the tide lock for different projects of seawall line. Result indicates that a rational seawall line program has little influence on the flood discharge of lock during the mean tide or general spring tides, but has certain influences during a storm surge or an extreme spring tide in autumn. However it could be resolved by several times of artificial scour on the...

Suspended Sediment Dynamics in the Macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) - Part 2: Numerical Modeling of Sediment Fluxes and Budgets Under Typical Hydrological and Meteorological Conditions ArchiMer
Schulz, Elisabeth; Grasso, Florent; Le Hir, Pierre; Verney, Romaric; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
Understanding the sediment dynamics in an estuary is important for its morphodynamic and ecological assessment as well as, in case of an anthropogenically controlled system, for its maintenance. However, the quantification of sediment fluxes and budgets is extremely difficult from in-situ data and requires thoroughly validated numerical models. In the study presented here, sediment fluxes and budgets in the lower Seine Estuary were quantified and investigated from seasonal to annual time scales with respect to realistic hydro- and meteorological conditions. A realistic three-dimensional process-based hydro- and sediment-dynamic model was used to quantify mud and sand fluxes through characteristic estuarine cross-sections. In addition to a reference...
